Calculators

Fast, zero-account, client-side calculators — no data leaves your device. Traveling soon? The Global Tipping Pocket Guide puts every country’s norms in one offline PDF for when you don’t have signal.

What a calculator can and can't decide for you

A calculator is fast at the one part of tipping that's pure arithmetic: turning a bill total and a percentage into a dollar-and-cents (or euro, or yen) amount, and splitting that across a group without anyone doing mental math at the table. What it can't do is tell you which percentage is actually right for the country and situation you're in — that's a cultural question, not a math one, and it's answered on the country and situation pages, not inside the calculator itself. Each calculator here links back to the relevant directory so you're never left guessing at the input.

Why these run entirely on your device

Every calculator on this page runs client-side in your browser — nothing you type into a bill amount or a party size is sent anywhere, logged, or stored. That's a deliberate choice, not just a technical convenience: a tip calculation is often happening in the middle of dinner, sometimes on a spotty restaurant wifi connection, and a tool that depends on a server round-trip is a tool that fails exactly when you need it most.

When to reach for a calculator vs. a guide

If you already know the percentage you're aiming for and just need the arithmetic done quickly, start here. If you're not sure what percentage is appropriate in the first place — because you're unfamiliar with the country, the situation is unusual, or you've heard conflicting advice — the country directory or the situations directory is the better starting point, and you can come back here once you have a number in mind.

Splitting a bill fairly, not just evenly

Group dining is where tip math gets genuinely error-prone under social pressure — someone's doing rough mental arithmetic while the table is waiting, rounding in whichever direction avoids looking cheap or over-generous. A dedicated split calculator removes that pressure entirely: enter the bill, the number of people, and the target percentage, and everyone gets an exact, defensible number instead of an eyeballed guess that quietly over- or under-tips the server.

What each calculator actually assumes

Every calculator here starts from a sensible default percentage for its use case, but defaults are a starting point, not a verdict — the wedding-gift calculator's suggested range and the tip calculator's suggested percentage both come from the same country and situation research as the rest of the site, and each calculator's own page explains exactly which assumption it's making so you're never just trusting a black-box number.
